Solar Impulse 2: Avión despegó de Abu Dabi para su primera vuelta al mundo sin carburante

Propulsado sólo por energía solar, el avión Solar Impulse 2 emprendió este lunes en Abu Dabi una vuelta al mundo sin precedentes, en la que promoverá el uso de las energías renovables y pondrá a prueba la resistencia de los pilotos.

«Comenzó la aventura», declaró el piloto suizo Bertrand Piccard tras el despegue del avión,pilotado en la primera etapa por su compatriota André Borschberg.

El aparato revolucionario, que no utiliza ningún carburante, despegó a las 07H12 locales (03H12 GMT), al despuntar del sol, del pequeño aeropuerto Al Bateen, en la capital de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos.

El Solar Impulse 2 puso rumbo al este y su primera etapa es Mascate, capital del sultanato de Omán, donde se espera su llegada al final del día. El trayecto de unos 400 km durará 12 horas.

Pasadas seis horas desde el inicio de la travesía, el avión sobrevolaba el Mar de Omán y ya había recorrido el 65% del itinerario.

Sin embargo, el avión de seguimiento, que supervisa la misión, estaba retrasado en Abu Dabi debido a dificultades técnicas, informó la misión en Twitter.

El despegue desde Abu Dabi, previsto en principio el pasado sábado, fue atrasado por los fuertes vientos que soplaron en la región todo el fin de semana.

Horas después del inicio de la misión, Borschberg habló con la prensa desde el avión y también llamó a su esposa, indicó el sitio web de la misión.

«El desafío que viene es real para mí y para el aparato», había declarado el piloto de 63 años poco antes del despegue.

Ante todo, se trata de «un reto humano», recalcó.

Vestidos con uniformes de color naranja, los dos pilotos, Borschberg y Piccard, realizaron las últimas inspecciones de noche. El primero se instaló en la cabina del avión monoplaza bajo los aplausos de todo su equipo.

13 AÑOS DE TRABAJO

La vuelta al mundo en doce etapas es el resultado de 13 años de investigaciones realizadas porBorschberg y Piccard, que más allá de la hazaña científica, quieren transmitir un mensaje político.

«Queremos compartir nuestra visión de un futuro limpio», declaró Piccard, y subrayó que esta misión debería contribuir a la lucha contra el calentamiento climático.

«El cambio climático ofrece una fantástica oportunidad para aportar al mercado nuevas tecnologías verdes», dijo.

La idea de volar sólo con energía solar fue al principio el hazmerreír de la industria aeronáutica.

Piccard, descendiente de una dinastía de científicos-aventureros suizos, dio la primera vuelta al mundo en globo sin escala en 1999.

El Solar Impulse 2 está propulsado por más de 17.000 células solares que recubren unas alas de 72 metros, casi tan largas como las de un Airbus A380.

Pero el SI2, concebido en fibra de carbono, no pesa más de 2,5 toneladas, tanto como un coche todoterreno familiar, y menos de un 1% del peso del A380.

SOBREVOLANDO LOS OCÉANOS

En total, el aparato recorrerá 35.000 km a una velocidad relativamente modesta (entre 50 y 100 km/h) y sobrevolará dos océanos, Pacífico y Atlántico.

Esta cincunvalación, a 8.500 metros de altitud como máximo, le llevará cinco meses, de los cuales 25 días de vuelo efectivo.

Después de Omán, los destinos siguientes son India y Birmania, antes de la etapa más larga del trayecto: cinco días consecutivos de vuelo para un solo piloto encargado de ir de Nankin, en China, al archipiélago estadounidense de Hawai, en el Pacífico.

Piccard indicó que el público podrá «seguir en directo todo lo que hacemos en la cabina» y «en el centro de control de la misión en Mónaco» en la web solarimpulse.com.

Un total de 130 personas participan en la aventura: 65 acompañarán a los pilotos alrededor del mundo (en el marco del apoyo logístico) y 65 estarán en Mónaco, en el centro de control de la misión (meteorólogos, controladores aéreos e ingenieros).

El Solar Impulse 2 es el sucesor del primer prototipo, el Solar Impulse 1, que permitió a sus creadores realizar varios vuelos de larga duración en Europa y Marruecos y ser los primeros en cruzar Estados Unidos en 2013, con varias escalas, en un avión de este tipo.
